  • Embark on a “city flavors” experience with a local foodie

Accommodation: The Yeatman Hotel

Today, you will meet your expert guide for a half-day tour of Porto!

You may start by exploring the city’s old quarter. The city, according to UNESCO, is “a masterpiece of mankind’s creative genius”, and was declared a World Heritage Site.

On the banks of the Douro River, you can visit the city’s churches and monuments. You will also have time to visit the Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa). The large, ornate neoclassical building built in the 19th century reflects the city’s status as a major commercial center. Then, tour the Hall of the Nations and the Arab room among many others.

Another must-see is the landmarked neo-gothic Lello & Irmao Bookstore. But pay attention: before heading in, gaze over the fascinating entrance. The magnificent façade is formed by a broad arch with its two painted figures representing Art and Science. This spectacular 19th century store features wooden benches with leather upholstery, wooden bookcases and a highly-ornamented staircase leading to the upper level.

Now, it’s time to cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia where you will learn the history of the famous Port wine and the wine making process! The drink known as Port became popular in England at the end of the seventeenth century. The locally produced wine was found to travel better by ship when brandy was added.

There are more than 40 varieties of grapes, picked in September in the special harvest known as “vindima”. You will tour a cellar with your expert guide and you will learn about the differences between the various styles of Porto’s such as the Vintage, The Single Quinta Port, LVB (Late Bottled Vintage), Crusted Port among others.

In the afternoon, you will have a city flavors experience with a local foodie, which combines the best gastronomy experience with culture in Porto city center. You will find the best groceries with unique smells, top typical flavors from traditional products (cheeses, traditional sausages, delicious ham, and unique sardines) and award-winning Portuguese wines. Best of all is that, you can buy all the products that you taste!

Afterwards, return to your hotel and enjoy your evening!

Day 3

Details for Today

Porto:

  • Board a traditional Rabelo boat
  • Explore the Douro Valley from the river
  • Participate in a Port tasting
  • Visit a winery

Accommodation: The Yeatman Hotel

Meals: B, L

Today, you will enjoy an excursion to the magnificent Douro Valley with your expert guide!

With an exceptionally beautiful landscape of terraced hillside vineyards, patches of woodland and charming little villages, this is the home of the worldwide famous Port. Besides this nectar, this is one of Portugal’s most unique wine region with a lot of secrets yet to discover. The Douro River crosses the oldest winery demarcation region in the World, the Douro Region, dated from 1756, established by Marquis of Pombal. The secular traditions of the Wine, Olive and Almond culture and the work done by the man in the construction of thousands of miles of schist walls, along the slopes of the river created a landscape of exceptional beauty. Because of this authenticity and integrity of the cultural landscape, in 2011 UNESCO raised the Alto Douro Wine Region for World Heritage status.

You’ll embark on a traditional Rabelo boat. This typical wooden vessel was used for years to transport Port wine barrels from Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia. In this private cruise, you’ll discover the Valley from the river, while tasting some Port wine. Today it’s all about wine and you will even go to a winery owned by one of the region finest producers. Here you can expect exquisite tastings and an unforgettable lunch. Life doesn’t get much better than gazing over the Douro Valley vineyards while enjoying fine food and exceptional wines.

At the end of the afternoon, you will return to your hotel.

Day 4

Details for Today

Transfer: to Lisbon

En route to Lisbon:

  • Visit the city Coimbra
  • Tour the oldest university in Portugal
  • Tour the small medieval village of Óbidos

Accommodation: Pousada de Lisboa

Meals: B

This morning, make your way south to Lisbon! En route, you will stop and visit Coimbra and the village of Óbidos.

Spend part of the day exploring Coimbra, a medieval city and ancient capital of Portugal in the Middle Ages, where it is renowned for possessing the oldest university in Portugal. Students from around the country came to Coimbra (even now) to excel in perhaps the best educational systems, creating a student sub-culture that gives it a unique vibrancy, color, and atmosphere that is unlike any other city in Portugal. The group of buildings that make up the oldest university in the country are internationally famous and the jewel in the crown is the Joanina library. You will stroll through the old part of the University where you will see the impressive 18th century clock, which dominates the skyline. Students in Coimbra wear colored ribbons indicating which faculty they attend. Every May, at the end of the academic year, the students burn these ribbons and a great celebration, the “Queima das Fitas”, takes place.

Further south, the small medieval village of Óbidos is certainly one of the more significant sights throughout history. Still completely surrounded by its ancient walls, its whitewashed houses and colorful bougainvilleas make for a very pleasurable day. King Dom Dinis built his massive castle here (now a Pousada) and gave the city to his wife as a wedding gift. Óbidos then became the traditional gift for Portuguese queens.

After, continue south where you will discover the capital city, Lisbon.

Day 5

Details for Today

Lisbon:

  • Enjoy a full day private-guided city tour
  • Explore the Castle of St. George
  • See the Sé Catedral
  • Visit the monumental Praça do Comércio
  • Embark on a private sailboat to see the spectacular vistas of Lisbon from the river

Accommodation: Pousada de Lisboa

Meals: B

Today, your expert guide and private driver will meet you at your hotel for a full-day tour of Lisbon!

The Belém district is your starting point. You may start your tour with a visit to the Belém Tower; it originally stood in the middle of the Tagus but now is just off the shore. For centuries, Portuguese explorers set off from this 16th century fortress in search of the riches of the new world.

A short walk inland, you will find the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The incomparable monastery epitomizes the Manueline style, a highly decorative form of architecture that emerged during the reign of Manuel I (1495-1521). A UNESCO World Heritage site, this ambitious building reflects the confidence Portugal enjoyed when its explorers roamed the seas. One of the greatest navigators, Vasco de Gama, is buried in the monastery’s church.

Later, stop for a snack at pastéis de Belém. These cream filled pastries are named after the neighborhood.

After lunch, you will visit the center of the city of Lisbon that is first and foremost a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is different and offers its secrets to those who allow themselves the pleasure of discovery: 19th century pharmacies still in use, hidden courtyards, sprawling bookstores, local fado bars, rounded storefronts, artisan workshops, full-to-the-brim antique stores, local bakeries and elegant villas. You will have the opportunity to see both the monuments and the little nooks and crannies known only to the true insider, to experience the rich variety of architecture and the local flavor that makes Lisbon special.

Head off to the old quarters of Alfama and visit the Castle of St George from where one can admire one of the best views over Lisbon, as it’s one of the highest points in the city. Here you’ll be able to trace the history of the ancient city and its maritime culture, whilst taking in the picture-perfect views of the city; its winding tree-lined streets, mustard roof-tops, and meandering river course.

Next you’ll go down to the River Tagus, passing the religious center of Portugal since 1147, the Sé Catedral. The fact that it is still standing today is a testament to its rich history and also to the strength of the people of this region: the region was recaptured from the Moors, and its people had the church built as a monument to their liberation.

Continue your way through the streets of the historic center until reaching the monumental Praça do Comércio, one of the biggest in Europe. You’ll have the river at your feet and the majestic Arco da Rua Augusta on your back.

Late in the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a private sailboat ride on Tagus River. You’ll embark on a soothing cruise and capture Lisbon in its entire splendor, just as great explorers did for centuries. While enjoying some drinks and light snacks, take in the views of the city. It’s a wonderful feeling to get out on the water and enjoy the sea breeze and the spectacular vistas of Lisbon that usually only the sailors and merchants get to appreciate.

When your tour concludes, your private driver will pick you up at the harbour and drive you to your hotel.

Day 6

Details for Today

Lisbon:

  • Tour Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Travel along the coastal road in a motorcycle sidecar
  • Visit the most western point of the European continent, Cabo da Roca
  • Stop at Cascais and enjoy the views of the sea at this seaside resort

Accommodation: Pousada de Lisboa

Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is steeped in history and offers some of the most exquisite natural and architectural sites in the country. Here, at the northern-most extent of the protected Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, history, archaeology, architecture and natural beauty combine to create a compelling and enduring centrepiece that has enjoyed centuries of popularity.

You will start by Palace of Pena. Located in the Sintra hills, the Park and Palace of Pena are the fruit of King Ferdinand II’s creative genius and the greatest expression of 19th-century romanticism in Portugal, denoting clear influences from the Manueline and Moorish styles of architecture. The palace was built in such a way as to be visible from any point in the park, which consists of a forest and luxuriant gardens with over five hundred different species of trees originating from the four corners of the earth.

After, you will discover Quinta da Regaleira, one of the most surprising of all Sintra’s monuments. Located on the outskirts of the town, it was built between 1904 and 1910, in the last days of the Portuguese monarchy. This romantic property formerly belonging to the Viscondessa da Regaleira, was acquired and enlarged by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920) as his favourite country estate. His vast fortune earned him the nickname of Monteiro dos Milhões, (Moneybags Monteiro). He commissioned this unique project of house and landscape from the Italian set-designer and architect Luigi Manini (1848-1936) whose genius, along with the mastery of sculptors, stonemasons, craftsmen who had formerly Palace Hotel do Buçaco, created this magical place.

On your way back to Lisbon, you will travel back on an exciting Motorcycle sidecar along the coastal road where you will enjoy wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and Tagus River. You might wish to stop at Boca do Inferno and Cabo da Roca, where you will find the most western point of the European continent, with impressive cliffs and ocean views. You will stop briefly in Estoril and Cascais, a seaside resort that serves as a popular summer retreat for Lisboetas.

When your tour concludes, you will be escorted back to your hotel.

As Portugal’s largest pottery centre, São Pedro do Corval has been the home to families of master potters who dedicate their life to the craft. Adobe bricks and terracotta objects are handmade, each day, in the workshops that border the main street and are a living proof of the region’s booming crafts.

Starlight destinations are places characterized by excellent quality for the contemplation of starry skies and the practice of tourist activities based on this resource. The region of the Great Lake Alqueva is a wonderful place to see the stars, constellations and distant galaxies such as the Milky Way. In Alqueva, the sky has good atmospheric conditions for stargazing most of the year. Such skies are disappearing in Europe, where most of the population has no longer the privilege to observe an unpolluted sky.

The experience will begin at sunset, while you enjoy a fresh, local made Gin & tonic. Wait for the night during dinner at the medieval village of Monsaraz.

Your tour in the stars will be guided by Miguel Claro, a Portuguese professional photographer, author and science communicator in the astronomy field, promoting the scientific divulgation of astrophotography. Several images by Miguel Claro have been distinguished by NASA as EPOD – Earth/Science Picture of the Day, and APOD –Astronomy Picture of the Day. Over the past few years he has specialized in astronomical photography of landscapes or Skyscapes, a concept that makes a connection between the Night Sky and the elements on Earth.
